The Greek island of Syros lies in the middle of an archipelago known as the Cyclades, which are clustered off the country's eastern coast in the Aegean Sea. Settled for at least 5,000 years, Syros covers a land area of just over 100 square km (around 40 square mi.) and has a populatio of a bit over 20k. Historically, given its position, Syros was considered one of the most important ports in the western Aegean.
